Warriors of Transcendence, Part 4

Ulu took a fallen branch, carrying it like a sword, as he turned to Sage, in     obeisance, like a soldier facing his commander. Ulu was a master of self control and so his children did not suspect his investigative objectives as he joined their game. “Please explain to us, honorable Emperor, how to recognize a Warrior of Transcendence.”
A serious look appeared on Sage’s face. The soldier’s obedience flattered him, and he replied solemnly, “It is hard to say. They can appear in various disguises, so one must be cautious of them”.
“Yes, one must be cautious of them,” echoed Shaii in adoration of her big brother.
It is of utmost significance, thought Ulu, that Sage has chosen the role of Emperor. Why had his son assumed such a powerful position? He had always been a delicate, dreamy child…
“I humbly request orders to engage them in battle,” offered Ulu, in his role as the Emperor’s ‘soldier’.
“You? But are you prepared?” asked Sage, toying with his imaginary sword.
“And who is prepared?” probed Ulu.
“Only the Emperor, of course,” answered Sage, arrogantly.
Someone has definitely touched the child’s soul, thought Ulu, in alarm.
“I wish you luck”, he said to the Emperor and everyone laughed as the suspense lifted and the game came to an end.
As he always did during his days at home, Ulu occupied himself with the various chores that awaited him. He strengthened the wooden fences, examined the vegetable patches and spent as much time as possible with his children. The sun dyed the sea red as the wind grew chilly. One night, after the girls finished their dinner and climbed into bed Ulu told them a bedtime story.
“…and then”, Ulu concluded their bedtime story in a festive manner; “the King glanced at him and said, Well, my prince, you have demonstrated your loyalty to me. From now on you shall reside in my palace, eat of my bread and drink of my wine. You shall remain close to me for evermore“.
Dorianne said, “I love your beautiful stories of the Ancient Progeny, Father, but have you ever seen them?!”
“Tell us,” added Shaii.
Ulu smiled, “Now you must sleep. Tomorrow I shall tell you more. There are thousands of wondrous stories about the Kingdom of the Ancient Progeny.”
Ulu entered the large living room, and allowed himself the luxury of relaxing on his comfortable, soft chair. The pleasant evening events offered only a temporary distraction for Ulu. Now his thoughts returned to the sharply contrasting, serious events occurring beyond King’s Valley. Eyes closed and deep in thought, he was unaware of his wife’s gentle presence. She sat down next to him and whispered his name. Her voice brought him back to reality. Opening his eyes, he gazed at her. Even before they were married, she had known that he had been chosen to serve the Chamber. Even back then there were rumors about dangerous developments in the Land of the Green Lowlands, although these vague rumors seemed far away. She understood the risks her husband would be exposed to but she appreciated the extraordinary qualities and abilities which he possessed.
“I know that you are destined for an important mission,” she had said back then, “but promise me that you will share everything with me!”
Ulu could not disclose his secret knowledge to her, but he had shared some of the details of his training in the White Desert. They had also talked about the persistent rumors of an impending war. Like most of the villagers, Ulu’s wife was unconcerned about these rumors.
No one is interested in the villagers, she would say with indifference whenever the matter arose. Why would anyone threaten our peaceful life? But, I do feel a vague sense of trepidation, she would say, without consciously knowing why. With her sharp senses, she felt many things were changing in the world. The weather had become stormier over the past few years. The animals had become increasingly restless, and people tended to remain more and more in their homes. There was a general feeling that something was coming, but no one seemed to be able to define it. Although she worried about her husband’s fate, she admired his brave participation in the great struggle beyond King’s Valley.
Now Ulu looked deeply into his wife’s eyes and announce, “I have seen the purple clouds.”
Her eyes filled with wonder. She knew about the Light of the Transcendor, the source of the great power of the Warriors of Transcendence.
A warrior who begins to see the purple clouds, he had once explained, reaches a place from which he may encounter the Light of the Transcendor.
In the darkness, the candles flickered, the dreaming children slept, and Ulu and his wife sat in silence together, contemplating Ulu’s extraordinary experience with the purple clouds.
“The Light of the Transcendor is revealed solely to those who can face the darkness bravely,” Ulu explained. “All the evil in the world comes into being when entities are separated from their original form. The Light of the Transcendor causes all illuminated entities to return to their original form; the primal form in which they existed prior to any distortion or slanting. Consequently, evil is destroyed and only goodness remains in those who receive the light”.
“Who is entitled to use this light?” she inquired, “and why do you fear its presence?”   Ulu had expected to encounter difficulties as he attempted to conceal his true emotions from his wife, but her perception was so clear, she saw through his bravado.   Had she discovered his fear of the Light of the Transcendor? For a moment he was silent, ashamed. Deep in thought, he answered softly, apologetically, “We have all distanced ourselves from the Source. We all hold inaccurate perceptions. Dark elements invade our thoughts. We are particularly prone to arrogance which causes us to feel separate and superior to others. This is considered a deep inner slanting.”
“And so?” Ulu’s wife did not quite comprehend his words.
“To summon the Light of the Transcendor, the Warriors of Transcendence must return to their most primal selves, the state of pure childhood. A warrior, who is not completely pure, is in danger of being harmed by the light. Excess, negative elements, waste elements like despair and arrogance need to be peeled off.”
“Is that a painful process?” she asked, her understanding increasing.
“It can kill!” Ulu replied. In the silence that ensued, Ulu’s wife tried to collect her thoughts. She arose from her chair and opened the window. For some time she gazed into the distant blackness, then turned back to face Ulu, her words bright and luminous.
“I know you. You possess sufficient purity. You shall not die.”
Once again, silence prevailed.
