Yitzchak Zev Soloveithchik
(1886-1959), also known as the Brisker Rav, was a son of Rabbi Chaim Soloveitchik of Brest, Belarus (known as “Brisk”). He is also known as the GRYZ, an acronym for Goan Rabbi Yitzchak Zev.
Rabbi Soloveithchik led the Jewish community in Brisk and served as the Rosh Yeshiva. He fled the Holocaust and moved to the British Mandate of Palestine, where he established the Brisk Yeshiva here in Eretz Yisroel. In Jerusalem, he continued educating students as his father did, with what would become known as the Brisker Derech of analyzing the Gemara.
This form of analysis stressed conceptual understanding combined with strict adherence to the text; it is also characterized by its emphasis on the Rambam’s Mishneh Torah. After his death, the yeshiva split and his sons succeeded him.
