The Boastful Buck – Part 13

Let me describe

The course of the race

That would be run

At quite a fast pace.

The first mile or so

That crosses the vale

Is wide-open running

So the deer can sail.

Then the path narrows

Among big oaks and firs

And enters the forest

Full of thickets and burrs.

For speed alone

On such a route

Isn’t what the race

Is all about.

All the birds and animals

Now strain to hear

Elder Jonathan Buck

A magnificent deer

For he has been summoned

To officiate the race

He tells the competitors

To take their place.

He explains the rules

Out there in the wild

The winner remains leader

And the loser’s exiled.

"So take your positions

Let us begin

The race is on

May the best buck win!"

To be continued.
