On Motzei Shabbat Chol Hamoed Pesach, Breslev’s Rabbi Eliezer Shlomo Shik (affectionately known as Mohorosh) asked to visit the Rebbe’s Ohel at exactly 1:35 AM. What was behind this strange request?

Rabbi Eliezer Shlomo Shick, a prominent leader in the Breslev movement who is known for spreading its teachings, had an odd request while spending Pesach with his followers in Monsey, NY. On Motzei Shabbat Chol Hamoed, he asked to be taken to the Old Montefiore Cemetery in Cambria Heights, Queens, and to be there at precisely 1:35 AM.

Rabbi Shick, a prolific author and publisher of Breslev teachings and the rabbi and spiritual guide of a “Breslev city” in the Lower Galilee town of Yavniel in Israel, also asked that the trip not be publicized in advance. When his son, Rabbi Moshe Shick, Rabbi of the Heichal Hakodesh community in Monsey, asked for the reason, his father said he wanted to pray at the Ohel (holy grave site) of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Only later did the senior Rabbi Shick agree to share the purpose of the late night trip.

“Exactly a year ago, on the eve of 19 Nissan 5772, I suffered a heart-attack in the middle of learning. It was exactly at 1:35 AM,” he began telling his son. “Throughout the surgery, while I was under general anesthesia, I saw the Rebbe of Lubavitch, OBM, standing over me and caressing my head.”

The Mohorosh said he heard the Rebbe tell him a few times, “Don’t worry. You’ll make it. I am caring for you that everything will pass. You’ll make it.”

“The reason why I am here at the same time as my heart attack,” said Rav Shick, “is to thank G-d Almighty that the Rebbe had a part in saving my life.”
