acts of love and kindness
Great article! The example of Danny and the day-care drop-off reminds me of a quote I saw this week in the Gutnick chumash (based on the Lubavitcher Rebbe's teachings in Likutei Sichos): "One should be careful not to be enticed by the evil inclination by seemingly 'religious' arguments not to be sensitive to the needs and feelings of others." Indeed, some might justify making the wife do the pick-up because of women's traditional roles as homemakers, which can be justified religiously, but nowhere does it say that men should not help out with childcare and other household duties, contributing to shalom bayis and his wife's happiness! As Rebbe Nachman teachers, as we raise our spiritual awareness we become more able to truly love one another (from Likutei Eitzot) "13) On Shabbat everyone experiences a certain enhancement of their perception of Godliness, and through this their capacity to give love to their fellow creatures becomes greater. For a person's capacity to give love is related to the degree of his perception. And when he offers love to others, he in turn receives love from Heaven (119)." "You must learn the thirteen Divine attributes of lovingkindness learn them in order to fulfill them in practice. You must cultivate the quality of love and do as many kindnesses as you can for other people. When we strive to fulfill each of the thirteen attributes of love, the thirteen supernal attributes of love are aroused, and the destructive angels brought into being through sin are humbled. Our own acts of kindness arouse God's forgiveness, and He passes over our sins one after the other (Rabbi Nachman's Wisdom 89)."
