Rabbi Shalom Arush with a personal message for Breslev Israel readers

Shalom U'vracha!
Breslev Israel’s Hebrew and English websites receive a prodigious amount of mail every day. Much of the mail is letters of appreciation for our websites, and particularly for the variety and quality of the articles, interviews, and film clips. Recently though, my personal mailbox at BreslovWorld has been filled with letters of a different nature, namely, the cries for help from parents and spouses of this generation’s new type of addict – the internet addict.

Addiction to the internet is tragic; but, when it’s coupled with addiction to pornographic sites, it’s a catastrophe - a spiritual tsunami that destroys marriages, livelihoods, and everything else that stands in its way. Here’s one of the letters of a young wife from the Tel Aviv area that wrote me how the internet trapped her husband in its poisonous web, destroyed her marriage, and robbed her of her happiness. See for yourselves:

Dear Rabbi,
I’m sorry for throwing my problems on your shoulders, but I don’t know of anyone else to turn to. If I don’t find a listening ear, either I’ll go crazy or I’ll just put an end to my miserable life. Believe me, I’m everything a man could want. I’m 29, athletic and attractive, a university graduate, intelligent, and I have a good career. I’m married and I have a cute little boy that’s almost three. Everything, right? I married a guy that was two years ahead of me in university. The beginning of our marriage was a dream with good communication and a healthy relationship on every level. That’s the honey, but here’s the sting – two years ago, my husband started a super-successful internet business. As a result, he left his job as marketing manager for a reliable company (a terrific and secure income) to devote all his time to the web business. Little by little, he started surfing to gambling sites, game sites, and even worse, the porno film sites. I don’t want to tell you what happened to a nice, wholesome Jewish guy. He became an animal – everything changed at home. His speech and behavior as well as his attitude toward me became filthy and abusive. Every time his own little son (who is irresistible!) wants to play with him, he chases him away as if he was some nuisance, like a stray dog. It tears me up. I’m withering from day to day and I don’t know what to do. Please, pray for me and give me some urgent guidance…

Here are a few of the points that I mentioned:

1. Soon, G-d willing, we will be expanding our presence on the internet, upgrading our existing Hebrew and English sites as well as adding Breslev Israel websites in French, Russian, and Spanish.

2. Our websites are for everyone! We welcome all of humanity. Anyone that turns to us receives an answer. Our English website has a special Noahide section with open arms for our non-Jewish friends with articles and special attention for their needs.

3. Our websites’ activities transcend far beyond what meets the eye. Behind the scenes, we’re answering phones and emails around the clock for the many people that turn to us with problems and requests for advice and prayers. Our motto is to help all of mankind; that’s also the reason for our existing websites and for our newly-planned websites, G-d willing. We have dozens of letters from web-surfers that have thanked us for literally saving their lives.

4. Our sites not only publish articles on a wide spectrum of issues, but provide our own Breslev Radio broadcasts 24 hours a day. We have an online store and several forums with many members, where I myself and other qualified rabbis answer questions in Halacha and outlook. Breslev Israel also sponsors a live and direct broadcast of my weekly Wednesday night lecture at 8:45 PM.

5. Divorce is worsening from day to day. Many of the letters to us show that pornographic addiction from the internet was an underlying factor in the deterioration of marriages.

6. Joy enables a person to function properly. Our mission on the web is to spread joy in the world, for Rebbe Nachman of Breslev said, “It’s a great mitzvah to be joyous always.” We here at Breslev Israel are committed to help people live happier lives with joy and emuna. We stand for 3 things: Love, Soul, and Joy.

7. I appeal to our readers – in Israel and abroad – to become full partners in the Breslev Israel websites, and to help us spread emuna and joy across the globe.

Our only objective is outreach, not financial.

We’re not looking to make money. We refuse to subjugate ourselves to any outside body or organization, so we have to be self-sufficient in spreading the teachings of Rebbe Nachman of Breslev around the world.
