How to Achieve Your Goals

It’s not enough to have inspiration, we must anticipate the obstacles which will inevitably present themselves and create a realistic plan to overcome them…

Transcribed by Devora Shifrin

Have you ever looked in the mirror and decided that today was going to be the day that you would finally make some changes? You likely told yourself that from that moment onward, you would no longer procrastinate, binge, watch TV shows, eat unhealthy food or spend hours on social media.

At that moment, you were probably filled will a sense of power, determination and energy that you believed would stay with you. Two weeks later however, you find yourself sitting with a bag of chips and scrolling through Instagram, while simultaneously watching your favorite show on TV.

Studies that have been conducted on this topic show that most people drop their new year’s resolutions halfway through the month of January. The passion and motivation that they initially felt quickly fades away as old habits find their way back to the surface. The lofty goals that they had set, suddenly seem insurmountable with every passing day.

Why does this predictable chain of events occur?

Since the nature of our reality mimics the formation of the world, let us first examine the sequence in which the world was created. God created the universe in increments, by distributing His energy and light in the manifestation of day, night, water, earth, and the various elements of nature. God condensed His light to be contained in each of these individual vessels.

Every person comes to this world as a co-creator. We are each born with a part of God’s infinite light within us, and our potential is therefore limitless. Just as the light of creation was constricted to be contained by the appropriate vessels, so to must we manage the light that comes in the development of our goals. It’s not enough to have inspiration, we must anticipate the obstacles which will inevitably present themselves and create a realistic plan to overcome them.

Sometimes, despite our best effort to prepare for every scenario, we may experience a breakdown before a breakthrough occurs. It’s important to remember that failures are merely a test in humility as it requires us to create a new strategy and to reaffirm our belief that all our success comes through time, effort, prayer, and Divine intervention. Failures present the opportunity to take a step back, question our approach, and restart brand new.

Hitting our goals and putting in the effort to change, highly depends on the degree to which we believe in ourselves. Breaking down our goals into smaller, easily achievable tasks will condense the light from our initial inspiration to be held in the vessels we have to contain it. Conquering smaller objectives, will create the momentum we need to build confidence in our ability to transform ourselves. This confidence will remind us that no matter how many times we experience failure, we must evoke the eternal source of energy within each of us and take hold of our ability to manifest our potential in every venture that we pursue.
