Reb Dov of Tcherin

Originally from Medvedovka, before becoming a disciple of Rebbe Nachman, he was a member of a group of intensely devoted Chassidim under the leadership of Reb Yudel.

Unable to achieve his spiritual goals, Reb Shimon went to Rebbe Nachman, who showed him that perfection is not achieved all at once, but slowly, stage by stage.

After meeting Rebbe Nachman, Reb Shimon returned to his family and friends in Dashev and told them about Rebbe Nachman. Instead of recriminating him for disloyalty, Reb Yudel and his group hired carriages – despite their dire poverty – and traveled to Rebbe Nachman in Medvedevka.

Reb Dov asked Rebbe Nachman to pray that he have children. The Rebbe told him to give charity. When he replied that he had none to give, the Rebbe said, "Have faith, emuna. The word 'emuna' has the same numerical value as 'banim,' 'children.'"

Rebbe Nachman commented that Reb Dov fears God as much as one fears physical torture from the Russians.

Reb Dov became a businessman. He was scrupulous in distributing one-fifth of his profits to the poor, as the Rebbe had directed him. His daughter married the Rebbe's grandson, Rabbi Avraham Dov (son of Adil).
