To the Synagogue with Father

Rebbe Simcha, little Nachman’s father, was about to go the synagogue one late Friday afternoon, before Shabbat.

Little Nachman approached his father, and asked politely, "Dear father, please take me with you to the synagogue. I also want to pray and to greet the Shabbat."

"But Nachman," said his father, "you are still a small child."

"Father," said Nachman, "I promise that I’ll behave and be a good boy. I won’t disturb you. In fact, I’ll sit next to you during the whole service and I’ll pray to Hashem too."

"Dear son, how can you pray if you haven’t yet learned how to read?"

Nachman answered, "I’ll speak to Hashem just like you taught me. Here’s what I’ll say: ‘Father in Heaven, thank you for all the wonderful things you give us. Help me be good, have pity on me so that I should grow to be an upright person, bless mother and father with good health, and help all of Israel to return to the ways of Torah…"

"That’s beautiful, Nachman," smiled his father. "If you can pray like that, you’re welcome to come with me to the synagogue."
