All across the forest
The birds chirped the news
The crows speculated
About who would lose
Squirrels, rabbits, and raccoons
All fought for a place
In the highest trees
Where they could see the race.
Hundreds of deer
From neighboring clans
Rushed to Deer Haven
And changed their plans.
So swift of foot
As fast as the breeze
Soon arrived on the scene
The deer referees.
