Breslev Israel and the Jewish people commemorate the passing of this generation’s pillar of brotherly love, a tzaddik, and Torah scholar of prodigious proportions, Rabbi Eliezer Shlomo Shick, of saintly and blessed memory, affectionately known as “Mohorosh” and the “Tzaddik of Yavniel”.

“Mohorosh” was born in Jerusalem on May 29, 1940. When he was a youth, his family relocated to New York City, when he eventually studied under Rabbi Moshe Feinstein. At the age of 15, “Mohorosh” came across the popular Breslev booklet Meshivat Nefesh by Rabbi Alter Tepliker, which attracted him to Rebbe Nachman’s teachings. He began to spend many hours each day in hitbodedut and studied more Torah in accordance with Rebbe Nachman’s system of learning.

In the 1970s, “Mohorosh” began writing small pamphlets about the teachings of Rebbe Nachman. He eventually printed thousands of copies of Rebbe Nachman’s Likutei Moharan and Sippurei Maasiyot.

Mohorosh was a prolific author. His works include:

  • Asher B’Nachal – 350 volumes of letters of encouragement that he wrote to people in answering their questions;
  • Questions and Answers on Breslever Chassidut;
  • The Treasury – 32 volumes that are comprised of over 100 booklets that he wrote on a variety of subjects;
  • P’eulat HaTzaddik – a biography of Rebbe Nachman of Breslev;
  • Sfat HaNachal – an elaboration of Rebbe Nachman’s Likutei Moharan;
  • Zot HaTorah – essays on the weekly Torah portion;
  • Sichot Mohorosh – 15 volumes of Mohorosh’s shiurim said to his students in Heichal Hakodesh;
  • Naharei Afarsemon – an elaboration on Rebbe Nachman’s Thirteen Tales;
  • Siddur Et Ratzon – an elaboration of the entire prayer book;
  • Ahavat Avot, Chasdei Avot, Magen Avot, and 19 other elaborations on Pirkei Avot;
  • Toch Hanachal – discourses based on the weekly Torah portion;
  • Kedushat Yisrael – an index of everything connected to personal holiness;
  • Erech Apayim – a book about patience and tolerance;
  • Ilan HaChaim – an ethics book about guarding one’s time;
  • Diburei Mohorosh – a compilation of his lectures in Yiddish, translated to Hebrew.

He left this earth on 17 Shvat, 5775 (Friday, Feb. 6, 2015) at the age of 74. Amazingly, the Hebrew gematria of “17 Shvat, 5775” equals 1103, the exact sum of the Hebrew letters in the name “Eliezer Shlomo Shick”.

Mohorosh’s accomplishments in one lifetime are mind boggling. He devoted his life to spreading the teachings of Rebbe Nachman, bringing people closer to Hashem and spreading love and unity among the Jewish People. No words can describe this tremendous loss. May his holy and blessed memory intercede in our behalf, amen!
