Looking for work is difficult. No matter how many resumes you send out, how good your writing samples are, how amazing that interview went (or how amazing you thought it went), in the end it's not up to you. You spend countless days waiting for a call, an email, even just an SMS notifying you of their decision.

It's a process that makes you feel helpless. That's what it was designed for.

Unemployment is the Divine Reminder that it is not by the sweat of our brow that we eat bread. A day job is just one of Hashem's infinite channels He uses to provide us with our material needs.

I re-discovered this one morning. I was getting dressed, and got to the point where it was time to put on my tzitzit and say the blessing. Something inside me lightly whispered, "Okay, now we get to work."

That's when it dawned on me. We are always working. We have jobs every minute of our life. At every moment we are on call, and our Boss is paying us a triple salary. We get the air we breathe, and a working body. We receive funds to enjoy a little more than the basics, and to give charity. We also get to receive the Ultimate Dividends in service of the King: A place in the Next World, being revived with the dead to celebrate the Third Temple and Jewish Kingdom, and Divine merit that is forever.

Talk about a retirement plan!

In the Mishna, Ethics of the Fathers, Hashem is called our Employer. We work for Him.
