Guidelines - Candle Lighting & Challah

The mitzvah of lighting the Shabbos candles has been cherished by Jewish Women throughout the generations. However, with the advent of electricity, the correct performance of this mitzvah is no longer a simple matter. In addition, halachic questions may arise in complex situations such as when the family is eating or sleeping away from home.

Although most people buy ready-made bread and cakes in today's society, with an increasing number of women opting to bake for Shabbos, at least, separating challah has its own halachos, many of which need clarification in a society where this practice had been done by less and less households over the past decades.

The rulings in this book are based on the decisions of the Chofetz Chaim, zt"l, as found in his classic work Mishna Brura and may occasionally differ from local custom. Any doubts that arise should be discussed with one's local rav.

By Rabbi Elozor Barclay and Rabbi Yitzchok Jaeger
